TFY Book Review: “A Yogi’s Guide to Chakra meditation” by Paul Grilley

For the long time of its existence Chakra meditation was a secret practice of the tantric tradition. Speculations of how old this particular tradition varies between 1500 and 3000 years. As a time bar: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras were written approximately 2000 years ago.

Coming out of the dark ages

In the last century great teachers from different traditions revealed or opened up their teachings to the world. We see this happening with the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism, Krishnamurti, Swami Vivekananda, Krishnamacharya as well as Swami Paramahansa Yogananda and Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama. Their reason for doing this is the need for light as we are coming out of the Kali yuga (dark ages) in the last 200 years. We see light and dark periods rippling throughout the centuries and the more people get to know and use these teachings the faster we move towards the light.

Paul Grilley’s newest book

Paul Grilley is a student from Dr. Motoyama who he refers to as his spiritual teacher. Paul studied yoga asana, meditation and philosophy for over 4 decades and is immersed in Chakra meditation. In his book “A Yogi’s Guide to Chakra meditation” he was able to build a bridge between Chakra meditation and Patanjali’s Yoga sutras and found out that the sutras are a guideline for this particular form of meditation.

A no nonsense approach

Without revealing too much, I find “A Yogi’s Guide to Chakra meditation” a unique book. First of all it’s the first guideline to Chakra meditation without a western psychological influence – a no nonsense approach. Second, it builds a bridge between Chakra meditation and Patanjali’s yoga sutras. And third, due to Paul’s (and his wife Suzee’s) decades of practice, observations and experiments with those techniques, combined with Dr. Motoyama’s science you could say that it’s a solid scientific approach. A must have for everyone who is practicing chakra meditation as well as those who practice other forms of meditation or want to start their practice.
